200 years ago, Shadowford Cove was known by a different name - the Shadowford Institute for Paranormal Research and Rehabilitation. The Institute was founded as a means to aid understanding and co-operation between races, for after centuries of keeping their true identities secret, non-human races were newly outed and perceived as potential threats to the human race.
However, a change in government meant that the Institute, which was meant to encourage co-operation between races, became corrupt and turned to cruel and malicious experiments on those supernatural beings they had within their power. These horrific practices were protested by members of all races, but any attempts to shut the institute down were cut short and the protesters silenced.
This continued for over 50 years and many innocent folk were killed until, led by one brave Angel, the in-mates of Shadowford mutinied against their captors and slaughtered all those who had overseen and engaged in their torture. They were not ruthless, however, and did no harm to those who had no knowledge of what truly went on at Shadowford. Those that had been left alive or escaped fled and, as those who had formerly been prisoners had no wish to remain, the Institute was abandoned. Many of the former captives died later as a result of their injuries, although it was whispered that some had lived and aimed to hunt down those who had ensured their hell. Certainly those who had been in charge lived in fear, though they did not live very long. The evil politician who had first ordered the change to Shadowford was the first to die.
It was ordered by the new government that the Institute be torn down and all traces of it removed, and it was so. After several years, work began to change the site of such immense horror into a city and the only trace of what had gone before was a small memorial in bronze which paid tribute to all those who had died without cause.
Depsite, or perhaps in some way, because of, the dark and bloody history of the place, Shadowford Cove has become a home and haven to both supernatural and humans alike. Although there is still some hostility between the races, and those with supernatural heritage still face prejudice, the world is not the cruel, close-minded place it was two centuries ago and for the most part, the residents of Shadowford Cove live in peace.
But it's never all sunshine and roses, and something of the city's dark history still lurks in the shadows....
